Luke Underhill
Atlas Unplugged
Independent Release, 2015
From Illinois, Luke Underhill presents this collection of austere and beautifully intimate songs. Singing, accompanied by either a solitary guitar or piano, offers honest writing about love, sometimes infatuted, and usually hopeful, and delivered with a voice as soft as well worn cotton.
Without flash or pyrotechnics, he stands on the strength of his voice and the sincere, heartfelt lyrics, which Underhill pours himself selflessly into. “Workingman’s Daughter” is a concise and fearless admission he is completely at ease with. The same goes for the arrangement on “No More Like Me.” the open spaces filled with the smooth understated guitar work, adds immeasureably to anotherwise simple number.
There’s a second electric guitar which helps to fill in the stark landscape with which Underhill normally works with. “Something” is upbeat and asserts a more lighthearted side.
This is a great slice folky Americana, urgent and honest, Luke Underhill, creates a compelling world with Atlas Unplugged.
