I’d seen the videos, so it’s not like I didn’t know what was coming. But I really didn’t know what was coming . . .

Sort of like how being prepared for a hurricane and riding one out are two totally separate things. Live, Here Come The Mummies are/were, well, sort of, wow!

They strode purposfully through the theater and audience with their own drum line, took the stage and exchanging the drum corp gear for their instruments, went into a determined rendition of “Carnal Carnival.”

The show didn’t slow down for next hour and forty-nine minutes, I know, I checked. Eight phenomenal musicians killing it, with non-stop, running back and forth in full mummy garb, playing some of the smoothest, funkiest and deep grooved R&B, this side of 1977.

Most of the songs are slightly dirty, always fun, and never venturing into the realm of nasty. The undead don’t have time for negative energy. “Booty,” “Everything But,” “Believe (In Things You Cannot See),” and “Freak Flag” all were bandied out, and all were sing alongs. The audience didn’t need prompting or enticement to join in. The players, many Image may be NSFW.

rumoured to have second careers in music where costumes aren’t required, used every opportunity to display some pretty serious chops.

And seriously, the single biggest compliment I saw, was how few people were futzing with their phones during the show. Sure people took pics and shot video, but I didn’t see anyone who allowed themselves to be absorbed or engrossed by their mandatory distraction device.

The Plaza positively bounced along with the solid dance track and a show Here Come The Mummies make look effortless.

They trotted out one slow song, the first number of the encore, and made a point of reminding the crowd to come by and get their pictures taken with band members. A classy move for a bunch of dead guys. They closed out the show with a high octane blast of “Single, Double. Triple.” with my HCTM cherry popped, one thing is obvious, this is a band I can’t see often enough.
