Genki Genki Panic

Independent Release, 2016

Genki Genki Panic lurk creepily, like a creepy lurking thing. Their hauntingly, memorable variety of 60’s horror themed rock will insert itself into the darkest part of your psyche. The part that still pauses cautiously before GGP DISC ARTentering a dark room, the room where strange sounds can be heard from when you’re at home all by your lonesome. And these songs are fraught with wit, and dark humor, beg to be played and heard repeatedly, asking you to internalize them, and allow them to become part of your muscle memory.

Every undead fiends dream is conveyed in “Two Girls, One Casket.” “When Bats Cry,” is another clever title to let woo you into a false sense of security. The song is by turns lyrical and introspective, with out losing any of the stout robustness we’ve come to expect from Genki Genki Panic. “Werewolf By Night” struts and catches itself, creeping, (remember the creepy part?), before dashing forth madly, and then reconsidering.

It would be great if GGP were able to break out and have their songs picked up for indie films. They are perfectly suited for the medium and work as scene defining soundtracks or incidental music. Either way, don’t be surprised when this band overwhelms your old record collection and they cower nervously in the corner, refusing to make an appearance while Genki Genki Panic are hanging around.
