Hell Cat
MammaBear
No Ego Records, 2016
There’s an honest vulnerability to the lyrics MammaBear attaches to it’s songs. No bravado or swaggering boasts, just a profound desire to connect with someone else personal level.
Title track “Hell Cat” is a folk song dressed up with smooth electric finery. It’s stomps like a roots rock number, earthy and demanding your attention. Free-wheeling and upbeat, this what pop music sounded like in simpler times.
“Cruise Control” has sharp, angular guitar leads against a jangly, ragged 60’s garagey backdrop. Fun and flighty, the band exudes an uncomplicated charm. “Wherever She’s There” is a slower, deliberately tender number.
The three songs on this release from this Atlanta outfit do what a great EP should, and whets the appetite, asking for more.
